Specializing in fertility, hormone health, and chronic conditions. For those looking for personalized care, especially when conventional options haven’t brought full relief, we blend Traditional Chinese Medicine with evidence-informed care to help you get to the root, support your body, and finally start feeling better.
If you’re considering acupuncture for the first time, we know that it may raise a few questions. That’s why we’ve pulled together answers to the questions we hear most often, so you can feel calm, prepared, and supported every step of the way.
Generally, we describe acupuncture as a way to “rebalance” the body, since imbalance gives rise to the symptoms that signal something is off. “Balance” is simply a way to generalize the state of homeostasis, which is the equilibrium your body is constantly working to maintain.
Sometimes, your system gets stuck in unproductive patterns due to lifestyle factors, injury, chronic conditions, or modern stressors. Acupuncture works to correct these patterns by addressing the energetic component of your body.
Your body is not only a biological (chemical) system, but also an intricate electrical network; nearly every chemical reaction is influenced by electrical signaling.
This means your physiological processes are inseparable from your body’s energetic flow. When an acupuncture needle is placed at specific points, it triggers electrical and chemical signals that help reset the signals in your tissues and nervous system, restoring balance to your system.
Yes! Our acupuncturists practice Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which is a comprehensive medical system that has been practiced for over 2,000 years.
Think of it like this: your TCM practitioner uses a specific set of tools, therapies, and modalities under the TCM diagnostic and corrective lens, such as acupuncture or herbal medicine, just as your medical doctor practices the Western Medicine model, using therapies such as pharmaceuticals or surgery.
At Eau Claire Acupuncture, we combine this ancient system with modern tools, such as the AcuGraph®, which provides a visual read on your body’s energetic balance. Based on your AcuGraph scan and your symptoms, your licensed acupuncturist creates a personalized treatment plan that may include needle placement, treatment frequency, and herbal recommendations specific to your condition.
No, acupuncture does not hurt. The needles used for acupuncture are finer than the needles used for injections or blood draws. Because acupuncture needles aren’t hollow, they glide more easily into the skin and are typically barely felt at all.
Many patients describe the experience as very relaxing. That’s because acupuncture activates your parasympathetic nervous system, also known as your rest and digest mode.
You may feel sensation around the site where a needle is placed; this is often described as a pressure, heaviness, or warmth, but it is rarely painful. Patients often describe feeling calm, using the time to nap, rest, or reset both the mind and body during their session.
It depends on your condition and how long you’ve been experiencing symptoms, but generally, acute conditions improve more quickly than chronic conditions.
We use a tool called the AcuGraph® system, which provides a visual representation of your body’s energetic balance. This allows us to measure your progress objectively, not just how you feel, but what’s shifting beneath the surface. → Learn more about how AcuGraph works.
Some patients may experience results after their first session, while others may notice more progress after multiple treatments. Because we are resetting a pattern across time, change is usually not a dramatic shift but a cumulative effect of progress. Are acupuncture results permanent?
Acupuncture results typically last over time, depending on the root cause and history of your condition. For example, if someone has an isolated back injury and receives treatment, the symptoms often resolve and do not return, provided the body remains in balance.
However, if the issue stems from ongoing lifestyle factors, like repetitive strain from work, symptoms may recur due to the original stressor.
Your initial treatment plan is designed for intensive correction, then gradually tapers into maintenance as symptoms improve. Chronic conditions usually require a longer corrective phase before transitioning into maintenance care. This ongoing care is recommended because many conditions are shaped by long-term lifestyle patterns that can cause symptoms to return.
Since every body responds differently, it’s important to identify underlying health influences, such as immune or gut weaknesses, to treat root causes. This approach helps support the body through stress and maintain balance over time. Even if your original complaint is resolved, we can help to address health concerns that arise and specifically treat these complaints based on your health history.
At your initial consultation, your acupuncturist will create a personalized treatment plan based on the severity, history, and root cause of your condition.
Your initial treatment plan could be anything from 3x a week for 3 weeks or once a week for 5 weeks; it really depends on what your body needs. An initial consultation is the best way to get clarity on your treatment plan and next steps.
Sticking to your treatment frequency is key. Just like physical therapy or building strength at the gym, acupuncture works best when it’s consistent and applied in a therapeutic dose. This allows your body to restore balance (homeostasis) more effectively, helping you see results sooner.
Once your symptoms improve and your system stabilizes, we’ll re-evaluate. For most patients, we recommend a monthly maintenance session after the initial series. These ongoing visits act as a preventative tune-up, helping to manage stress, support immunity, and address the daily lifestyle factors that can lead to recurring symptoms and imbalance over time.
Yes, acupuncture is highly effective for many conditions, particularly in managing pain, improving function, and supporting the body’s natural healing process.
We see great results for a wide range of concerns, including chronic pain, stress, hormonal imbalances, digestive issues, fertility, and more.
While acupuncture is not a replacement for emergency medical care or a primary treatment for conditions like cancer or broken bones, it can be a powerful complement to conventional medicine.
Many of our patients use acupuncture alongside other treatments to help:
In short: acupuncture works best as part of a holistic, integrative approach to health, and we’re here to help you find the right plan for your needs.

Your initial consultation is designed to help us better understand you — your health history, current symptoms, and long-term goals.
Here’s what happens during your visit:
You’ll start by meeting with your acupuncturist for a conversation about your health history, symptoms, and goals. We will address any physical, emotional, or lifestyle concerns you’d like to discuss.
Our comprehensive review of your health history helps inform our treatment plan and approach to your concerns. Your initial consultation and exam should last approximately 45 minutes to an hour. If you choose to receive your first treatment on the same day, your total appointment will be around an hour and a half to two hours.
Using our AcuGraph® system, we’ll take a non-invasive scan that reads your body’s energetic balance across key meridians (read more here to understand meridians 🙂).
This gives us an objective view of where your system may be out of balance. Your practitioner may also use Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnostics, like a tongue or pulse assessment, to get an even clearer picture of how your body is functioning.
Based on your scan and your symptoms, your acupuncturist will explain what’s going on from a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective and outline a personalized treatment plan.
Our team is certified by the NCCAOM, licensed in the state of Wisconsin, and holds Master’s degrees in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Everything we do is grounded in both time-tested tradition and research-backed care.
This initial consultation and exam does not include treatment. That said, based on your symptoms and exam results, we’ll typically offer to start treatment the same day if it feels like a good fit for both of us. This part is completely optional.
A typical acupuncture session lasts about 45 minutes to an hour.
Here’s what to expect:
Each session is designed to give your body space to reset, restore balance, and support the healing process.
Yes, acupuncture is very safe when administered by a Licensed Acupuncturist who is trained in proper technique and clean needle protocols. Most people feel relaxed and refreshed after treatment.
However, mild side effects can occasionally occur. You may feel tired, sore, lightheaded, or more aware of sensation or feeling in your body following your acupuncture treatment.
In some cases, symptoms may temporarily worsen before improving. This is part of your body’s natural rebalancing process and usually passes quickly.
Your safety and comfort are always our top priorities. If you ever have questions or concerns, we’re here to support you every step of the way.
The number of needles used in a session varies, ranging from 5 to 30 needles. The most common areas of the body that we needle are the lower arms and hands, the lower legs and feet, the head, and the ears. For some conditions, we may also needle the chest, abdomen, or back.
While dry needling and acupuncture both use the same type of thin, solid needles, they are very different in purpose, training, and approach.
Dry needling is a technique commonly performed by physical therapists or chiropractors to relieve tight muscles (often called trigger points). It’s a localized treatment designed to release tension in a specific area, like a muscle knot, by inserting a needle directly into the tight spot. Dry needling can also be effective in stimulating a nerve to “fire” in a muscle or to restore its proper function. Practitioners typically complete a short certification course to use this technique; PTs and Athletic Trainers need 25-27 hours of training, and Chiropractors need around 50. Providers with a Master’s degree in Chinese Medicine have completed over 2,600 hours of training.
Acupuncture, by contrast, is part of a complete medical system called Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Licensed Acupuncturists undergo 3–4 years of specialized training to diagnose and treat the root cause of symptoms, not just the local pain.
Acupuncture follows meridian pathways and uses a whole-body approach to restore balance, regulate internal systems, and support healing across a wide range of conditions. Furthermore, acupuncturists can perform dry needling, which is commonly referred to as “ashi” points.
So while dry needling can be helpful for short-term relief of muscle tension, acupuncture offers a broader and more comprehensive approach, especially if your pain is linked to stress, poor posture, circulation issues, or systemic imbalances.
We recommend wearing loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to areas like your arms, lower legs, and abdomen. If we need to access a specific area for treatment, we’ll ensure you’re comfortable and properly draped throughout your session using a gown and/or sheets.
Yes, please eat a light meal or snack before your appointment. Avoid coming in on an empty stomach, as that can sometimes lead to lightheadedness during or after your session.
We’re a private pay practice, so we don’t work with insurance. That said, we can give you the paperwork to send in (it’s called a Superbill) and some of our patients do get partial reimbursement depending on their plan. You are welcome to use your HSA or FSA card for your visits. We can even keep that card on file for quick check-outs.
Reimbursement policies:
If you do intend to submit your visits for insurance reimbursement, you must pay per visit (no packages). This allows us to provide an appropriate itemized superbill. Additionally, we can not create more than one superbill per visit. We do not guarantee insurance payment.
Anyone can benefit from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), whether to address specific health concerns, chronic or acute, or to maintain overall wellness and prevent illness. At Eau Claire Acupuncture, we welcome new patients who are ready to explore holistic, evidence-informed care.
You should consider booking a new patient consultation if you are:
In addition, acupuncture can play a supportive role in managing symptoms related to more complex health conditions such as cancer, autoimmune diseases, and neurological disorders.
At Eau Claire Acupuncture, our experienced practitioners offer individualized treatment plans and may also recommend Chinese herbal medicine or high-quality, nutraceutical-grade supplements to complement your care.
Yes, acupuncture is one of the most powerful ways to support your body during both pre-conception and pregnancy. And at Eau Claire Acupuncture, this is one of our core specialties.
Whether you’re preparing for natural conception, going through IVF or IUI, or already pregnant and looking for holistic support, we offer personalized, research-informed care that helps your body feel stronger, calmer, and more prepared every step of the way.
Acupuncture is well-established as an effective tool to support fertility, both naturally and alongside fertility treatments. We help you:
Modern research shows that acupuncture can improve blood flow to the reproductive organs, stabilize hormone levels, and even increase pregnancy rates, especially when started at least 3 months prior to trying to conceive.
Acupuncture is safe and highly effective throughout pregnancy when performed by a Licensed Acupuncturist trained in prenatal care. We help with:
We’ve supported hundreds of women through every stage of this journey, tailoring care to your body, timeline, and goals, whether you’re just starting to plan or nearing your due date.
You don’t have to wait for something to be “wrong” to get support. Acupuncture can help create the conditions for a healthy pregnancy, birth, and beyond starting from the very beginning.
Acupuncture is a great adjunct therapy to support your body in preparing for labor and to complement your plan with your midwife or OBGYN.
Regardless of whether an induction is achieved naturally or with medication, induction is outside the scope of our practice. Therefore, our goal is to prepare your body for labor by relaxing the nervous system, stimulating blood flow to the cervix and pelvic region, balancing hormones, and optimizing pelvic alignment and positioning.
We recommend acupuncture once a week at weeks 34, 35, and 36, and twice a week at 37 weeks and beyond. Our protocol is backed by our patients’ results, with many of our patients having spontaneous labors, experiencing 4-5 cm dilation before active labor, and often don’t get induced medically.
To begin as a new patient, you’ll first schedule a consultation with your acupuncturist. During this visit, they’ll create a personalized treatment plan, and you’ll have the option to receive your first acupuncture treatment the same day.
We offer both standard consultations and fertility-focused consultations, depending on your goals.
Ongoing acupuncture treatments are available individually or as part of a treatment package, which offers savings and is designed to support consistency in your care.
Please note:
Our treatment packages are non-refundable and non-transferable. They’re intended to make in-office payments easier and to support your commitment to a consistent treatment plan. Because the package is designed for individual use, sessions cannot be shared or gifted.
If you’d like to apply a session toward another in-clinic service (such as a Bioscan or facial), we’re happy to accommodate that—you would just cover any difference in service cost.
We’re here to help. Whether you’re new to acupuncture or returning for care, our goal is to ensure you feel informed, supported, and confident in your next step.
If you’re curious about how acupuncture can support you or are ready to get started, you can schedule your consultation with just a few clicks.
